535: “Lion’s Den” - Pitch Your Science-Based Policy Intervention to Real Politicians

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Organized by: Elect STEM

Elect STEM will be offering a workshop modeled after the popular TV show “Dragon’s Den” – the Lion’s Den. We will ask pre-selected participants to give a 3-minute pitch on a desired political intervention driven by their science. This would be an intervention that would need to be passed as a bill or motion at any level of government anywhere in the country. Our panel of Lion’s will evaluate each participant’s proposal, providing educational feedback for our audience on how to pitch science policy to politicians. Participants will receive constructive feedback from our Lion’s and a hypothetical motion to their proposal. The motion of each proposal will be made by a combination of an audience poll and the ‘expert judgement’ of the Lion’s. For their bravery into the Lion’s Den, each participant will receive a ‘badge of honour’ from Elect STEM that they can show off to their colleagues and encourage future political participation of scientists and engineers. We hope this workshop will offer valuable communication training for scientist interest in science policy or engaging in politics.
