Peter A. Newman

Dr. Newman is a professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, and affiliate faculty of the Joint Centre for Bioethics, University of Toronto. He is a former Canada Research Chair in Health and Social Justice (2007-2018) and an Inaugural Fellow of the U.S. Society for Social Work and Research. With over 165 peer-reviewed publications, he has been recognized as among the most highly cited social work researchers in North America. His research program addresses global health and human rights, with a focus on HIV and sexual health among sexual and gender minorities, and racialized populations, and social-structural challenges of HIV prevention. He leads a SSHRC Partnership grant with an 8-country multidisciplinary team—from social sciences, fine arts, and medicine—to gather and mobilize evidence to advance LGBTIQ inclusion and human rights in Asia. He has collaborated with UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO, PHAC, NIH, and serves on the International AIDS Society’s Towards an HIV Cure Initiative.
